Physical properties of a Red-Yellow Latosol and productivity of a signalgrass pasture fertilized with increasing nitrogen doses
01/Dec/2013
The physical properties and fertility of the soil are important factors in the formation and establishment of pasture. Changes in physical properties affect the movement of water, air, nutrients and roots, which, in turn, affect the productivity and longevity of pastures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of the soil and the dry matter yield of a pasture with signalgrass cv. Basilisk (Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk), fertilized with increasing nitrogen doses (N), on a dystrophic […]
Behavior of iron oxides in the clay fraction and adsorbed phosphorus under different sugarcane cultivation systems
01/Dec/2013
In agriculture, the search for higher crop yields based on sustainable soil management has led to a gradual pursuit of knowledge of the variables related to production systems. The identification of the causes of variability of these properties has become a part of strategic planning in the sugar and ethanol industry. This study investigated the spatial variability of iron oxides in the clay fraction and its relationship to soil physical and chemical properties in different sugarcane cultivation systems in the […]
Structural and magnetic characterization of maghemites prepared from Al-substituted magnetites
01/Dec/2013
Synthetic aluminum-substituted maghemites were characterized by total chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (ME), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The aim was to determine the structural, magnetic, and hyperfine properties of γ-Fe2-xAlxO3 as the Al concentration is varied. The XRD results of the synthetic products were indexed exclusively as maghemite. Increasing Al for Fe substitution decreased the mean crystalline dimension and shifted all diffraction peaks to higher o2θ angles. The a0 dimension of the cubic unit cell decreased […]
Quality of soil organic matter under coffee intercropped with green manure
01/Dec/2013
The input of organic residues associated with the humification process promotes improvement of soil properties and enables the sustainability of the production system. Aside from supplying the coffee with nutrients, pulse crops can improve the quality of soil organic matter by forming humic substances. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of green manures legumes on the quality of humic substances in soils under coffee under two environmental conditions in the region of Zona da Mata, in […]
Quantification of aluminium in soil of the Solimões Formation, Acre State, Brazil
01/Dec/2013
The variety of soils in the State of Acre is wide and their chemical profiles are still not fully understood. The nature of the material of origin of these soils is indicated by the high aluminium (Al) content, commonly associated with high calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) contents. The study objective was to use different methods to quantify Al in soils from toposequences formed from material of a sedimentary nature originating from the Solimões Formation, in Acre, Brazil. Trenches were […]
Mineral reserve of potassium in Oxisol under Pinus taeda L.
01/Dec/2013
In Brazil, Pinus species are grown on approximately 1.87 million hectares, usually on chemically poor soils. The present study investigated the mineralogy of sand, silt and clay fractions and estimated the mineral reserve of K by different chemical extraction methods in naturally K-poor soil under Pinus taeda L., in the State of Paraná, Brazil. In a 500 m2 area, five trees with large diameter (dominant trees) were selected, and trenches opened (depth 1.6 m) under the canopy of each tree. […]
Rose production affected by silicon rates applied to substrate
01/Dec/2013
The use of Si in the cultivation of pot-grown ornamental species in greenhouse has increased the output and quality of the final product. The objective of this study was to evaluate yield and nutrient uptake of two rose cultivars grown in pots under Si application to the substrate. The treatments, arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial design, consisted of two rose cultivars (Yellow Terrazza® and Red White Terrazza®) and five Si doses (0.0; 0.25; 0.50; 0.75 e 1.00 g […]
Soil nitrogen dynamics after Brachiaria desiccation
01/Dec/2013
Brachiaria species, particularly B. humidicola, can synthesize and release compounds from their roots that inhibit nitrification, which can lead to changes in soil nitrogen (N) dynamics, mainly in N-poor soils. This may be important in crop-livestock integration systems, where brachiarias are grown together with or in rotation with grain crops. The objective of the present study was to determine whether this holds true in N-rich environments and if other Brachiaria species have the same effect. The soil N dynamics were […]
Cycling of nutrients and silicon in pigeonpea and pearl millet monoculture and intercropping
01/Dec/2013
In a no-tillage system, cover crops must be used that combine shoot dry matter production and nutrient recycling. The aim of this study was to evaluate shoot dry matter production, decomposition rate and macronutrient and silicon release from pigeonpea and pearl millet in monoculture and intercropping systems. A randomized block design was used with a 3 x 6 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The first factor consisted of three cover crops (pigeonpea, pearl millet and intercropping of these cover crops) […]
Efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer applied at corn sowing in contrasting growing seasons in Paraguay
01/Dec/2013
In order to select soil management practices that increase the nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) in agro-ecosystems, the different indices of agronomic fertilizer efficiency must be evaluated under varied weather conditions. This study assessed the NUE indices in no-till corn in southern Paraguay. Nitrogen fertilizer rates from 0 to 180 kg ha-1 were applied in a single application at corn sowing and the crop response investigated in two growing seasons (2010 and 2011). The experimental design was a randomized block with three […]
