Two bacterial strains that amplified part of the nifH gene, RP1p and RP2p, belonging to the genus Enterobacter and Serratia, were isolated from the rhizoplane of Lupinus albescens. These bacteria are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile, facultative anaerobic, and fast-growing; the colonies reach diameters of 3-4 mm within 24 h of incubation at 28 ºC. The bacteria were also able to grow at temperatures as high as 40 ºC, in the presence of high (2-3 % w/v) NaCl concentrations and pH 4 […]

The cohesive character is a property of subsurface soil horizons with hard to extremely hard consistency when dry, and friable or firm when wet. Despite the agricultural importance, the formation of these horizons has not been fully explained. The objective of this study was a chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological characterization of cohesive soils of the Coastal Tablelands in Northeast Brazil, to understand their pedogenesis and identify properties for the definition of the cohesive character by the Brazilian System of Soil […]

Phosphorus concentration changes in soils under flooded rice in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Gustavo Kruger Gonçalves, Egon José Meurer

01/Apr/2010

Soils used for production of flooded rice in the state of Rio Grande do Sul are originated from different parent materials, resulting in different characteristics that affect P availability for the crop. The aim of this paper was to verify the differences in P availability for rice in soils originated from different parent materials. The experiment was carried out in a complete randomized block design, where five soils were exposed to absence or presence of triple superphosphate. In the soils […]

Soil-applied silicon decreases severity of wheat spot blotch on silicon-deficient soils

Spot bloth caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is an important wheat desease mainly in hot and humid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of wheat to different sources and modes of Si application, as related to the severity of wheat spot blotch and plant growth, in two Si-deficient Latosols (Oxisols). An greenhouse experiment was arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial completely randomized design, with eight replications. The treatments consisted of two soils (Yellow Latosol and […]

Soil roughness is influenced by soil management, particularly by soil tillage and mainly reduced by rainfall action. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different systems of soil management and artificial rainfall application on soil surface roughness. The treatments were a result of the combination of three systems: no-tillage, conventional tillage and minimum tillage, with three levels of dry soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill): residue: 0; 2; and 4 Mg ha-1. Experimental units received artificial rain (seven rains), at […]

The use of sewage sludge in Brazilian agriculture was regulated by the resolution no. 375 Conama, in 2006. However, there is a lack of research to adequate the mineral N and P fertilizer doses to be applied in agricultural fields treated with this residue. In a field experiment, the effects of application rates of sewage sludge and mineral N and P fertilizers on the productivity and technical characteristics of the cane-plant and first ratoon (residual effect) crops were evaluated. Four […]

Erosivity and hydrological characteristics of rainfalls in Rio Grande (RS, Brazil)

Marcos Gabriel Peñalva Bazzano, Flávio Luiz Foletto Eltz, Elemar Antonino Cassol

01/Feb/2010

Specific rainfall characteristics vary among regions and their erosion potential must be known for the planning of agricultural and civil engineering activities. For Rio Grande (RS, Brazil), the erosivity and relationships with the precipitation and rainfall coefficient, rainfall hydrologic patterns and return period were determined based on rainfall data of 23 years. For each erosive rainfall the segments of the rainfall chart with the same intensity were separated together and the data registered in worksheets. The mean monthly and annual […]

Losses of productivity of flooded rice in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, may occur in the Coastal Plains and in the Southern region due to the use of saline water from coastal rivers, ponds and the Laguna dos Patos lagoon, and the sensibility of the plants are variable according to its stage of development. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the production of rice grains and its components, spikelet sterility and the phenological development of […]

Leaf area of common bean genotypes during early pod filling as related to plant adaptation to limited phosphorus supply

Roberto Santos Trindade, Adelson Paulo Araújo, Marcelo Grandi Teixeira

01/Feb/2010

Low phosphorus supply markedly limits leaf growth and genotypes able to maintain adequate leaf area at low P could adapt better to limited-P conditions. This work aimed to investigate the relationship between leaf area production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) genotypes during early pod filling and plant adaptation to limited P supply. Twenty-four genotypes, comprised of the four growth habits in the species and two weedy accessions, were grown at two P level applied to the soil (20 and 80 […]

01/Feb/2010

Among the different methods of assessing the nutritional status of plants, DRIS and CND have the main purpose of ranking the limiting nutrients. This study aimed to develop DRIS and CND norms and compare the diagnoses of these methods in evaluations of cotton cash crops in the region of São Desidério, state of Bahia, Brazil. The database consisted of the total nutrient content of 65 whole leaf samples and seed cotton yield of plots with an average size of 120 […]
