ABSTRACT: High copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) contents in soil can cause phytotoxicity to plants and contaminate surface and groundwater, with negative effects on agriculture and the environment. Functionalized charcoal (OCh) has high cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the ability to adsorb Cu and Zn and control their availability in the soil and water. An adsorption study at two pH levels was carried out to evaluate increasing Cu and Zn sorption capacity provided by the functionalization process of a charcoal. […]

The soil P sorption capacity has been studied for many years, but little attention has been paid to the rate of this process, which is relevant in the planning of phosphate fertilization. The purpose of this experiment was to assess kinetics of P sorption in 12 representative soil profiles of the State of Paraíba (Brazil), select the best data fitting among four equations and relate these coefficients to the soil properties. Samples of 12 soils with wide diversity of physical, […]

Boron adsorption in acric soils as a function of pH variation

Boron (B) adsorption by soils affects its bioavailable contents and contamination potential. The objectives of this study were: (a) to investigate the effects of pH variation on B adsorption by topsoil and subsoil samples from an Anionic “Rhodic” Acrudox (RA), an Anionic “Xanthic” Acrudox (XA) – both with a positive balance of charge in Bw horizon – and a Rhodic Kandiudalf (RK); (b) to evaluate the ability of the Langmuir model of simulating the experimental results of B adsorption; and […]

The pollution effect of trace elements in the environment depends mainly on the capacity of soil colloids to sorb and maintain them in high energy bonds. This study evaluated the adsorption of Cd, Cu, and Pb in A-horizon samples of Red Latosol and Red-Yellow Latosol (Udox), with similar texture and contrasting mineralogy. For this purpose, isotherms of adsorption, monoelement and multielement were built, based on the soil sample reaction in 5 mmol L-1 Ca(NO3)2 solution adjusted to pH 5.5, with […]

Distribution and decomposition dynamics of atrazine in an ultisol under wet tropical climate conditions

01/Feb/2006

The biodegradability and distribution of pesticides in the environment determine their pollution potential. The risk of contamination with atrazine herbicide was studied in an Ultisol under field conditions and complemented with a microcosm system study. This system allowed the use of 14C-atrazine under controlled conditions and to determine of the volatilization (0.33%), mineralization (0.25%) and leaching (4 to 11%) parameters, which are difficult to evaluate in the field. Ninety percent of the radioactivity remained in the soil, with 75% in […]

Interactions between P and S anions and soil colloids are significant, mainly those rich in iron and aluminum oxides, whose electric surface charges vary according to the pH and ionic strength of the solution. The objective of this study was the evaluation of phosphate and sulfate adsorption on surface and subsoil samples of a clayey Anionic Acrudox, a medium-textured Anionic Acrudox and a clayey Rhodic Kandiudalf from the northern region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Maximum phosphate and […]

Atrazine, an herbicide of the s-triazine group, was used in laboratory experiments to determine its mineralization and sorption on samples of a Dusky-Red Latosol under conventional and no-tillage systems. Atrazine ring-labeled 14C was added to the soil samples, with the 14CO2 being produced and atrazine-14C soil extracts analyzed by liquid scintillation. The results showed very low mineralization rates of atrazine, which were correlated with the total carbon and nitrogen contents, as well as with soil humic fractions. Atrazine mineralization decreased […]

Retarding factor and dispersion-diffusion coefficient for chromium (III) in highly weathered soils, influenced by pH, texture and organic matter

M. A. K. Alcântara, O. A. Camargo

01/Mar/2001

The purpose of this work was to obtain the retarding factor (R) and the dispersion-diffusion coefficient (D) for chromium (III) in two highly weathered soils collected in São Paulo, Brazil. The influence of the following factors on these two parameters were analyzed: textures, pH and soil organic matter. Samples of the A and B horizons of two soils were used, differing significantly in organic matter contents (a) a Typic Eutrorthox (LVe) and (b) a Typic Haplorthox (LVd). Soil pH of […]
