ABSTRACT Information is scarce on the genesis and classification of soils derived from calcareous rocks in the Northeastern region of Brazil. This study describes the morphological, physical, chemical, mineralogical, and micromorphological properties of four soil profiles (P1-P4) located in the Apodi Plateau. A pedogenesis hypothesis and soil classification, according to the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS), are proposed for these profiles. The interactions between parent material, surface topography and climate affected the pedogenesis processes and soil properties, although the […]

Intermittent Pond Areas in Coastal Tablelands of the Reconcavo Region of Bahia, Brazil: Genesis of Areas, Characterization, and Soil Classification

ABSTRACT Coastal Tablelands are flattened areas cut by valleys, which have predominantly Argissolos Amarelos (Yellow Argisol) and Latossolos Amarelos (Yellow Latosol). In contrast to this landscape, there are depressed circular areas, known as ponds, that create new dynamics in soil formation, due to the intermittent presence of water throughout the year. The soils of these pond areas are little known, which leads to the possibility of inappropriate use and management. The objective of this study was to describe the soils […]

Relationship between Soil Properties and Vegetation in the Ecotone Region of the Middle São Francisco River Valley, Brazil

ABSTRACT The Middle São Francisco River valley is a vast territorial area with marked seasonal change and diversity of lithology, landscapes, soil, and vegetation. However, the relationships between soil characteristics and plant communities are poorly known. In this study, we show the relationships between key soil properties that determine the establishment of savanna-steppe, wooded savanna-steppe, savanna, semideciduous forest, and deciduous forest in this region through analysis of 166 soil profiles. In general, savanna soils are much more leached, Al-saturated, and […]

ABSTRACT Preservation of mangroves, a very significant ecosystem from a social, economic, and environmental viewpoint, requires knowledge on soil composition, genesis, morphology, and classification. These aspects are of paramount importance to understand the dynamics of sustainability and preservation of this natural resource. In this study mangrove soils in the Subaé river basin were described and classified and inorganic waste concentrations evaluated. Seven pedons of mangrove soil were chosen, five under fluvial influence and two under marine influence and analyzed for […]

GROUPS OF INCEPTISOL PEDONS BASED ON CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES APPLYING MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS

In a soil survey, a detailed description of a set of soil properties is important for analyzing and understanding the interactions of several soil forming processes. Thus, multivariate analysis may be an important statistical tool to better interpret and understand the relationships and similarities between pedons. The aim of this study was to differentiate and group similar pedons based on physical and chemical properties using multivariate statistics. The study was carried out in Lages, SC, Brazil, at 27º 48’ S […]

Located in the Midwest of the State of Minas Gerais, a region called Quadrilátero Ferrífero covers an area of approximately 7,000 km2. Since the seventeenth century, it is known as gold- and iron-producing province, and the geological context is therefore one of the best-studied of Brazil. The regional topography is very rugged, with mostly poorly developed pedogenesis, especially Cambissolos Háplicos, Neossolos Litólicos and Neossolos Regolíticos. In a smaller proportion and on colluvial ramps (hilly relief), very Fe-rich Latossolos Vermelhos occur, […]

Nine profiles were studied along a toposequence developed on Barreiras Group sediments, in Fazenda Rio Negro, Entre Rios, Bahia, Brazil. Besides conventional analysis, an electromagnetic probe through GPR – Ground-Penetrating Radar was employed. The objective of this study was to analyze the use of this tool in the acquisition of information on features occurring underground, by comparing the radargrams and pedologic descriptions obtained in the area. The equipment used was a Geophysical Survey model, with an 80 MHz antenna. The […]
