Genesis and Classification of Soils Containing Carbonate on the Apodi Plateau, Brazil
12/May/2016
ABSTRACT Information is scarce on the genesis and classification of soils derived from calcareous rocks in the Northeastern region of Brazil. This study describes the morphological, physical, chemical, mineralogical, and micromorphological properties of four soil profiles (P1-P4) located in the Apodi Plateau. A pedogenesis hypothesis and soil classification, according to the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS), are proposed for these profiles. The interactions between parent material, surface topography and climate affected the pedogenesis processes and soil properties, although the […]
Diagnosis of the Nutritional Status of Garlic Crops
12/Apr/2016
ABSTRACT Univariate methods for diagnosing nutritional status such as the sufficiency range and the critical level for garlic crops are very susceptible to the effects of dilution and accumulation of nutrients. Therefore, this study aimed to establish bivariate and multivariate norms for this crop using the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) and Nutritional Composition Diagnosis (CND), respectively. The criteria used were nutritional status and the sufficiency range, and then the diagnoses were compared. The study was performed in the […]
Intermittent Pond Areas in Coastal Tablelands of the Reconcavo Region of Bahia, Brazil: Genesis of Areas, Characterization, and Soil Classification
01/Dec/2015
ABSTRACT Coastal Tablelands are flattened areas cut by valleys, which have predominantly Argissolos Amarelos (Yellow Argisol) and Latossolos Amarelos (Yellow Latosol). In contrast to this landscape, there are depressed circular areas, known as ponds, that create new dynamics in soil formation, due to the intermittent presence of water throughout the year. The soils of these pond areas are little known, which leads to the possibility of inappropriate use and management. The objective of this study was to describe the soils […]
Relationship between Soil Properties and Vegetation in the Ecotone Region of the Middle São Francisco River Valley, Brazil
01/Dec/2015
ABSTRACT The Middle São Francisco River valley is a vast territorial area with marked seasonal change and diversity of lithology, landscapes, soil, and vegetation. However, the relationships between soil characteristics and plant communities are poorly known. In this study, we show the relationships between key soil properties that determine the establishment of savanna-steppe, wooded savanna-steppe, savanna, semideciduous forest, and deciduous forest in this region through analysis of 166 soil profiles. In general, savanna soils are much more leached, Al-saturated, and […]
Soil Vis-NIR Spectra and Fuzzy K-means on Definition of Soil Mapping Units in Topossequences
01/Dec/2015
ABSTRACT Knowledge of soils is increasingly important for their correct use in agriculture, in urban growth, and in conservation of natural resources, among other purposes. However, there is a lack of qualified professionals for pedological characterization and mapping, particularly at scales of greater detail. Due to this shortage and due to advances in computational tools and remote sensing, Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) arose in order to assist and expedite pedological survey activities. Thus, the aim of this study was to […]
ASSESSMENT OF BIOAVAILABILITY OF HEAVY METALS AFTER VERMICOMPOSTING IN THE PRESENCE OF ELECTRONIC WASTE
01/Dec/2015
ABSTRACT Heavy metals contained in electronic waste, if discarded improperly, can become bioavailable after vermicomposting, posing a risk to the environment. Small-scale vermicomposting experiments were carried out with printed circuit boards (PCBs) to investigate the migration of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Sn) to the final compost, as well as the mobility and bioavailability of these metals. High total levels of Pb, Sn and Cu in samples of manure with electronic waste (MEW) and vegetables with electronic waste […]
Physical, Macro- and Micromorphological Properties of Regosols in the Agreste Meridional Region of Pernambuco, Brazil
01/Sep/2015
ABSTRACT Regosols in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco, Brazil, are used for various agricultural activities, and prominent among them is production of common bean. An expressive variation is perceived in common bean crop yield, possibly associated with the presence of lamellae, which make for distinct water fluxes among these soils. The objective was to analyze the macro- and micromorphological, and physical characteristics of the Regosols located in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco to understand the water fluxes in […]
Genesis, Characterization, and Classification of Mangrove Soils in the Subaé River Basin, Bahia, Brazil
01/Sep/2015
ABSTRACT Preservation of mangroves, a very significant ecosystem from a social, economic, and environmental viewpoint, requires knowledge on soil composition, genesis, morphology, and classification. These aspects are of paramount importance to understand the dynamics of sustainability and preservation of this natural resource. In this study mangrove soils in the Subaé river basin were described and classified and inorganic waste concentrations evaluated. Seven pedons of mangrove soil were chosen, five under fluvial influence and two under marine influence and analyzed for […]
Multiple Geotechnological Tools Applied to Digital Mapping of Tropical Soils
01/Sep/2015
ABSTRACT In recent years, geotechnologies as remote and proximal sensing and attributes derived from digital terrain elevation models indicated to be very useful for the description of soil variability. However, these information sources are rarely used together. Therefore, a methodology for assessing and specialize soil classes using the information obtained from remote/proximal sensing, GIS and technical knowledge has been applied and evaluated. Two areas of study, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, totaling approximately 28.000 ha were used for […]
IRON, SILICON, OR ALUMINUM FORMS, OR THEIR COMBINATION, IN THE GENESIS OF FRAGIPANS AND COHESIVE HORIZONS OF COASTAL TABLELANDS
01/Jul/2015
In the geomorphological unit of the Coastal Tablelands of Brazil there is a predominance of cohesive soil horizons and some with the presence of cemented horizons, commonly of the fragipan type. These horizons interfere with water dynamics, root growth, and, consequently, mineral nutrition of plants. The objective of this study was to use selective dissolution to evaluate the participation of forms of Fe, Si, or Al, or their combination, in the cohesion or cementation or both of fragipans and cohesive […]
