In order to investigate the efficiency of sulfate green rust (GR2) to remove Ni from solution, GR2 samples were synthesized under controlled laboratory conditions. Some GR2 samples were synthesized from Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate salts by precipitation. Other samples were prepared by coprecipitation, of Ni(II), Fe(II) and Fe(III) sulfate salts, i.e., in the presence of Ni. In another sample, Ni(II) sulfate salt was added to pre-formed GR2. After an initial X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization all samples were exposed to ambient […]

The pollution effect of trace elements in the environment depends mainly on the capacity of soil colloids to sorb and maintain them in high energy bonds. This study evaluated the adsorption of Cd, Cu, and Pb in A-horizon samples of Red Latosol and Red-Yellow Latosol (Udox), with similar texture and contrasting mineralogy. For this purpose, isotherms of adsorption, monoelement and multielement were built, based on the soil sample reaction in 5 mmol L-1 Ca(NO3)2 solution adjusted to pH 5.5, with […]

This study aimed to identify lacustrine or marine sediments based on biogenic opals (also known as spicules). The layers and horizons of a Humic Gley Thiomorphic soil in the Riacho catchment area, Aracruz, state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, were analyzed. Each soil sample was specifically treated to isolate the spicules, which were then identified by an electronic microscope. It was possible to verify the presence of lacustrine as well as marine spicules. Moreover, the shape of the opals provided information […]
