Magnetite and its transformation to hematite in a soil derived from steatite
01/Mar/2001
The main objective of this work was to characterize the magnetic minerals and to identify their pedogenic transformation on a steatite-forming soil of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The iron-rich spinel phase was characterized by chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, with and without an externally applied magnetic field of 6 tesla, and saturation magnetization measurements. Nearly stoichiometric and well-crystallized magnetite was the only magnetic mineral actually detected. The cubic unit cell parameter of the fresh rock magnetite was found to […]
Controlling ammonia losses during composting by adding phosphogypsum and superphosphates with different levels of residual acidity
01/Mar/2001
Adding simple superphosphate or phosphogypsum to piles of manure or other organic residues has been recommended to reduce losses of ammonia by volatilization during composting. However, experiments have shown discrepant results when the efficiency of these additives and the adequate rate of application are evaluated. This discrepancy could possibly be explained by differences in the residual acidity of the additives utilized in those experiments. To check this hypothesis, a laboratory experiment was carried out using samples of phosphogypsum, simple superphosphate […]
Nirogenase and nitrate reductase activities and productivity of common beans in response to foliar application of molibdenum
01/Mar/2001
The effectiveness of the nitrogen supplying to bean plants as fertilizer and, or, as biological nitrogen fixation, and the dependence of these processes on molibdenum availability is still a not well solved problem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of Mo on nitrogenase and nitrate reductase activities and on productivity of beans cultivated on a Red Yellow Podzolic, in Coimbra, MG (Brazil). The treatments consisted of increasing rates of foliar application of Mo […]
Rainfall-runoff erosivity parameters correlated with soil losses and erodibility of an oxisol from Dourados, southern Mato Grosso, Brazil
01/Mar/2001
This study analyses the correlations among erosivity parameters and soil losses, between June 24, 1979 and October 10, 1994, in an Oxisol from the Unidade de Execução de Pesquisa de Âmbito Estadual at Dourados – EMBRAPA, Southern Mato Grosso, Brazil. Rainfall erosivity, runoff, and rainfall-runoff parameters were analysed through simple and multiple linear regression and nonlinear regression, to: (a) define an erosivity parameter for individual storms, aiming to improve the use of the USLE at that site; (b) obtain the […]
Mineralization and sorption of atrazine in a dusky-red latosol under conventional and no-tillage systems
01/Mar/2001
Atrazine, an herbicide of the s-triazine group, was used in laboratory experiments to determine its mineralization and sorption on samples of a Dusky-Red Latosol under conventional and no-tillage systems. Atrazine ring-labeled 14C was added to the soil samples, with the 14CO2 being produced and atrazine-14C soil extracts analyzed by liquid scintillation. The results showed very low mineralization rates of atrazine, which were correlated with the total carbon and nitrogen contents, as well as with soil humic fractions. Atrazine mineralization decreased […]
Oxygen supply to root systems: a physical approach
01/Mar/2001
The understanding of the physics of root aeration may allow a more correct and dynamic estimate of the minimum air-filled porosity, providing a more complete estimate of the plant behavior in relation to soil water content and gas conductivity of the soil. The aeration process is physically described in this paper to show that the result may be useful for estimating minimum air-filled porosity as a function of the total soil porosity, depth to be aerated and oxygen consumption rate. […]
Resistance to penetration and permeability of a typic dystrophic red latosol under management systems in the cerrado region
01/Mar/2001
The direct consequences of inadequate soil management are erosion, productivity reduction and loss of sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance to penetration and permeability of soil to water under management systems used in the cerrado region. The study was conducted at Embrapa Corn and Sorghum, in Sete Lagoas (MG), using a cerrado phase, very clayey, typic dystrophic Red Latosol (Acrusthox). The native cerrado provided lower soil density, higher macroporosity, higher total volume of pores, and consequently, smaller resistance […]
Similarities between brazilian “cohesive” soils and hardsetting soils: a case study
01/Mar/2001
The term “cohesive” has been used in Brazil to distinguish sub-surface soil horizons that have hard, very hard or extremely hard consistency when the soil is dry, and friable when the soil is wet. Australian soils with similar behavior were identified as hardsetting. Researchers have indicated that many soils in Africa and other semi-arid regions can also be characterized as hardsetting. Based on the definition and characteristics of the hardsetting soils, it is believed that “cohesive” soils of the Low […]
Retarding factor and dispersion-diffusion coefficient for chromium (III) in highly weathered soils, influenced by pH, texture and organic matter
01/Mar/2001
The purpose of this work was to obtain the retarding factor (R) and the dispersion-diffusion coefficient (D) for chromium (III) in two highly weathered soils collected in São Paulo, Brazil. The influence of the following factors on these two parameters were analyzed: textures, pH and soil organic matter. Samples of the A and B horizons of two soils were used, differing significantly in organic matter contents (a) a Typic Eutrorthox (LVe) and (b) a Typic Haplorthox (LVd). Soil pH of […]
Influence of some soil characteristics on the available boron
01/Mar/2001
The aim of this work was to study the extraction of available boron using hot water and CaCl2 5 mmol L-1, and a microwave oven as the heating device. Boron was determined using azomethine-H. The influence of some soil characteristics on the performance of the extractants, was also studied. Corn plants were grown in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized block design, using 17 soil types and 6 B rates (0.0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.60, 0.90 and 1.5 mg dm-3) in a factorial with three […]
