ABSTRACT: The evaluation of soils in representative landscapes constitutes an opportunity to evaluate spatial distribution, discuss formation processes, and apply this knowledge to land use and management. In this sense, from the perspective of an environmentally diversified region, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the occurrence and understand the formation of soils in different geomorphic surfaces of a landscape from a mountain region in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The study was developed in the Pito […]

The arbuscular mycorrhizal association established between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF-phylum Glomeromycota) and plant roots plays an essential role in plant survival and nutrition. In this review, the idea is outlined that the triad “riparian forest-carbon sequestration-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi” should be taken into consideration as an environmentally compatible strategy for the recovery of areas formerly covered by riparian forests. We briefly discuss the soil classes found in riparian areas and the C input in terrestrial ecosystems. AMF play an important role […]

Knowledge of the soil physical properties, including the clay content, is of utmost importance for agriculture. The behavior of apparently similar soils can differ in intrinsic characteristics determined by different formation processes and nature of the parent material. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of separate or combined pre-treatments, dispersion methods and chemical dispersant agents to determine clay in some soil classes, selected according to their mineralogy. Two Brazilian Oxisols, two Alfisols and one Mollisol with […]

Geoprocessing for the characterization of soils developed from basalt and sand material

Brazilian soil surveys are mostly outdated, with few details, usually based on discovery and recognition. This fact can be ascribed to the traditional, slow and expensive soil survey method, requiring a great number of field observations. Thus, faster and cheaper soil mapping techniques must be developed. The objective of this study was to characterize soil mapping units in the region of Ibaté and São Carlos, state of São Paulo, measuring slopes and altitudes, based on a digital elevation model (DEM).
