Deep-Litter and pig slurry as nitrogen sources for corn

Sandro José Giacomini, Celso Aita

01/Feb/2008

Most of the pig manure generated in the swine production in southern Brazil is handled and stored as liquid manure, but there is a growing interest in adopting the deep-litter production system and using the resulting organic material as fertilizer. A field experiment was carried out on a typic Hapludalf in an experimental area of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, from October 2002 to March 2003, to evaluate the soil N […]

The agroforestry systems have been widely promoted as one sustainable agricultural system, mainly for developing areas, where the external use of resources are not feasible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of one conventional and four agroforestry systems on the contents of total soil nitrogen, mineral nitrogen and different organic nitrogen fractions after five years of experimental cultivation on a Luvisol (Alfisol). The study area was in the semi-arid zone at the National Caprine Research Center […]

This field experiment was carried out at the Fundação Agrária de Pesquisa Agropecuária [Agrarian Foundation for Agricultural and Cattle Research] (FAPA), in Guarapuava, State of Paraná, Brazil, during the growing seasons of 1999 and 2000. The objective was to verify residual effects of nitrogen fertilization on maize crop under a no tillage system, in presence and absence of white clover and grazing animals. The experimental layout was a completely randomized block design with three replications. The treatments were arranged in […]

Black oat/corn succession has been commonly used in the south of Brazil and N fertilization management is important for its success, especially under no-tillage. This study was carried out at the experimental area of the Department of Soil Science, at Federal University of Santa Maria (RS), Brazil, during 1999/2000, using a Hapludalf (sandy loam/clay loam). The objective was to evaluate the possibility to transfer, partially or totally, the amount of N, normally sidedressed to two applications – black oat tillering and […]

Carbon and nitrogen microbial biomass of soils under different forest types

01/Sep/1997

The fumigation-extraction method was used for measuring soil microbial biomass of C (BM-C) and N (BM-N) in a red-yellow latosol under different forest types. Soil samples from eucalypt and pine plantations presented higher values of BM-C (223.72 and 207.39 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively) than samples from Piptadenia rigida and regenerating secondary forest (82.94 and 79.47 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively). Similar results were obtained for the litter layer. On the other hand, the […]
