Soil phosphorus forms under systems of sole corn and corn-bean intercrop under organic and mineral fertilizer
01/Aug/2006
Soil management systems affect the P dynamics in content and forms. The aim of this work was to measure the effect of several cultivations systems in the long term (16 years) on the different soil P forms. The treatments consisted of combinations of the two cultivation systems: sole corn (C) and corn-bean intercrop (CB), with two levels (0 and 1) of organic fertilizer (OF), at rates of 0 and 40 m3 ha-1 year-1 and three levels (0, 1, 2) of mineral fertilizer (MF) […]
Carbon, nitrogen, and microbial biomass activity in different litter structures of a natural forest
01/Oct/2004
The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the organic and nutritional quality on the activity and C and N contents of the microbial biomass in different structures of litter from a Mountain Atlantic Forest from around the Desengano State Park-RJ, Brazil. Litter samples were collected in September 1999. The litter structures were leaves, branches, and superficial roots; fine debris (F structure); and organic matter smaller than 2 mm (H structure). The nutritional and organic litter quality influenced the activity […]
Biological properties of aggregates from a Cerrado Oxisol under conventional and no-till management systems
01/Jun/2003
The distributions of microbial biomass carbon (MBC), enzymes activities and readily mineralizable carbon were evaluated across soil aggregates recovered from a Dark-Red Clayey Oxisol in areas under native Cerrado vegetation and where no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) management systems have been established for 21 years. Soil samples were collected at a 0 to 5 cm depth and aggregates were prepared using a wet sieving procedure. The size classes 8.0 to 2.0 mm, 0.5 to 0.25 mm and 0.25 to 0.106 mm and samples denominated […]
Phosphorus in the microbial biomass and acid phosphatase activity by phosphate application in soil under no-tillage system
01/Dec/2002
Microbial biomass and phosphatase activity are essential for phosphorus dynamics in the soil and its supply for plants. This research determines the effects of phosphate application on phosphorus accumulation in microbial biomass and on acid phosphatase activity in soil under no-till system. In January 2000, samples of the 0-10 cm soil layer were collected from the treatments of accumulated application rates (0, 130, 180, 260, 360, 540, 720, 980 and 1,240 kg ha-1 of P2O5) during the six experimental years […]
Heavy metals, microbial density and activity in a soil contaminated by wastes from a zinc industry
01/Dec/1998
Mining and metallurgical activities are responsible for pollution of extensive soil areas around the world, with their effects not being well known under Brazilian conditions. Total and water soluble contents of heavy metals and microbial density and activity were evaluated, in this 1996 study using samples from seven sites located in a dumping site of a zinc industry in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Additionally, a non-contaminated site was used as reference. All contaminated sites presented high total and […]
Carbon and nitrogen microbial biomass of soils under different forest types
01/Sep/1997
The fumigation-extraction method was used for measuring soil microbial biomass of C (BM-C) and N (BM-N) in a red-yellow latosol under different forest types. Soil samples from eucalypt and pine plantations presented higher values of BM-C (223.72 and 207.39 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively) than samples from Piptadenia rigida and regenerating secondary forest (82.94 and 79.47 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively). Similar results were obtained for the litter layer. On the other hand, the […]
