The occurrence of cohesive soils in Brazil is predominantly related to sandy-clay sediments of the Barreiras Formation, which are geologically related to the sedimentary deposits of the Tertiary period (from Paleocene to Pliocene), which constitute the geomorphological unit of the Coastal Plains.
